Pre-service Checklist

HVAC Maintenance Best Practices

Calling your contractor for HVAC system maintenance is a great way to keep your equipment running smoothly for years to come. To get the most out of a maintenance visit, here's an HVAC maintenance checklist for homeowners.

Residential HVAC Maintenance to Perform Before Your Service Call

If you're thinking about an HVAC maintenance schedule, know that many contractors are busiest in the summer and winter. So it's best to call them in the spring or fall for routine maintenance. However, sometimes you can't help when a problem creeps up. Before you call the pros, do the following HVAC system maintenance. To learn more, view an extended maintenance checklist for contractors on the ENERGY STAR website.

  • Review the troubleshooting guide from YORK®.
  • Inspect your air filter (one that's too dirty can cause problems) on your air conditioner, furnace or heat pump once a month — clean and change as needed.
  • If you discover your heat pump or air conditioner is frozen, shut it off and allow it to thaw.
  • Check your thermostat settings.

Preparing for Your Service Call

To get the most out of your service call with your YORK® contractor, complete the following to make sure the visit is as smooth as possible.

Pre-service Checklist

  • Write down the model numbers of all your YORK® products.
  • Know how long ago your problem began and be able to describe the problem or service required.
  • Make sure the system is accessible – remove anything blocking your system.
  • If it's the first time your YORK® contractor is visiting, make sure you know where every YORK® unit is located.
  • Inform your contractor of any smart home connected devices.
  • Gather any notes you have on previous service visits/repairs completed.
  • Keep pets in a separate room so they don't get overly excited.
  • Arrange for an adult (18 or over) to be home to legally allow entry.
  • Provide a phone number to receive a call from the technicians confirming the service visit.
  • If you rent your home, get your landlord's permission to have your system serviced.
  • Write down questions before the visit.
  • Ask what the next steps are if any issues are identified.
